Staffort becomes Terra Medica

Staffort was chosen as the site for cultivating medicinal plants since this is where a drug (dried medicinal plant) storage depot had initially been acquired. This opportunity was used to lease land around the storage depot from the community. The storage depot included a well system which could be utilised for our cultivation purposes. Another advantage was that the land was a good distance from both traffic and industrial plants, and so was ideal from an environmental perspective. By 1976, preparations had reached the point that cultivation of the open land could be commenced.
In 1989, the greenhouses were put into operation, replacing the old houses on the company grounds in Durlach. From the outset, the new greenhouses were intended for sowing seeds and propagating the plants. A show house in Staffort keeps the tradition of the old greenhouses alive. Staffort has belonged to DHU since 2007. The new name for the medicinal plant plots, Terra Medica, was established by a section of the Schwabe-DHU task force that oversaw the creation of the Visitor Centre.
